Aside: ‘cotton batten’ rolls off my tongue, but my Canadian Oxford tells me that a more common North American version (especially outside Canada) is ‘cotton batting’.

    1. Thanks, Merril. Word differences are so interesting. I have heard of cotton batting but in this context I couldn’t say anything other than ‘cotton batten’ (and fortunately my dictionary lets me know I’m not making it up).
