  4. This one is quite beautiful; to me, one of the best you’ve written. The March sunlight, scattered atop the snow, feels transformed into starlings. The reference to snow flying, rather than the starlings, is the essence of haiku, to me at least. 🙂

    1. Thank you. It’s always amazing how unexpected things can happen when you bring two images together. It was not until after I posted that I realized the effect … the flying snow and a scatter of starlings…the snow was flying, being blown up from the ground by the wind…

      1. I know what you mean be the luck of unintended consequences. This sort of “sense switching”, the transformation of the expected into the unexpected (the transformation of the dust of snow into black starlings) is something a strive for as often as possible in my own haiku. It gives the haiku a sort of magical realism that I love above all. It makes the reader say: Oh, I’ve never seen the world that way! Or the connection between two things.
