my life a wake
behind father’s boat
free yet in tow
~
in tow, traversing
glass, crisp ruffles, rough whitecaps
a capricious landscape
when I fall or let go
the boat will return

Nice one. I like the ‘double haiku’ style start … great photo to go with it, too.

Thanks Roger…the photo shows me when I was ten.

Even greater photo, then. I have some old dusty black and whites down in the basement. Lovely things and totally un-digital.

I like the old black and white photos from simple cameras. It’s amazing what you can see in them. I don’t miss having to get film developed and storing more and more photos (the collection I have is enough).

I have some of my grandfather in WWI … incredible brown / sepia spotted photos. Such memories. Rad maps with contours, like the back of my hand.

I water skied when I was young. I loved it.

I was lucky to have been around people who wanted to teach me…I am not from a ‘sporty’ family…and I absolutely loved water skiing.

I know the “fall” part well. I tried skiing once, when I was 29. My scuba buddy took us out on Sodus Bay, east of Rochester. After 4 or 5 spectacular spills (upright 10 seconds each time – maybe), I had enough. Meanwhile, my 2 1/2 year-old son was frantically crying on the boat, because Daddy was getting battered. I continued scuba for another fifteen years. I figured I was safer underwater.

I learned when much younger so the impact of the spills in the beginning would not have been so dramatic….scuba diving sounds both wonderful and daunting to me.

I love the photo and the haiku, especially as I’m reading it on the anniversary of my father’s death. Thank you, Janice.
