It’s been freezing rain forever it seems. Vast puddles behind the house have frozen, melted, and frozen again. The first day of spring was in March and now, in mid-April, winter still lingers having teased us with dramatic reappearances and sudden exits. In the rain I hear birds laugh and chatter. They know spring is here despite her white frozen disguise. Wielding a shovel to chop soft ice, I chuckle with them.
Ice storm is over
rain rinses snow away
trickling in the gutter

Two kigo prompts helped me create this small haibun: Haikai Challenge #29: warm (atataka) and Chijitsu: Lingering Day—dVerse Haibun Monday.
I think many shovels have a sharp edge after this winter.

All the birdsong as the sun rises gives me hope that there is an end to winter in sight for sure. (K)

For me too…hearing the birds…seeing them flying and in the trees is reassuring.

We are living this same scene here. I laugh (a little) too. Spring is really teasing us this year.

I’m smiling at your chuckling along with the birds 😀 … may Spring make itself known to you soon!

Yesterday was a cold rainy day from dawn to dusk.
So this morning I got out soon after the sun. Twice even.
It was a sad to see that some yellow forsythia flower were hanging their heads so low… but at least they were still on the bush.
I am hoping we get some spring before summer erupts! Not asking much am I?

I really love how you describe the back and forth of winter and spring… a tug of war going back and forth between warmth and cold.

Thanks Bjorn … a tug of war is a good metaphor for this weather game.

Your poem here makes me feel as if old man Winter better know when he is not wanted. I love it!

Your weather sounds extreme. Your haibun has a zen quality in the way you accept the changes.

Thanks Suzanne…’extreme’ would describe the weekend we just had!

Ah, the fickleness of weather, so well described. I really like the way you included the birds and their laughing with you.

….and the tug if war continues. I am still waiting to put my seeds down. The birds do seem to be taking it in stride. A nice write Janice.

Thank you…yes thank goodness for the birds! I’ve got some seedlings started inside but I’m not sure when I’ll be sowing outside.
