Drink hot soup tomato red
this February night.
Burn a candle flame.
Winter blood still
bathes chilled joints.
Newborn microbes
dance unseen.
Wear wool to hug the skin,
Breathe to clear dry lungs.
We are defrosting,
departing from winter hibernation.
Spring barely has begun.

Thank you. It does seem colder…or at least not much warmer 😉

we’re in for the wild ride here in our great white north – along the lakes and in the hills – winter still has a strong hold, but we can at least enjoy a milder stretch – loved the particulars of this – starting with the hot soup tomato red –
this poem has the feeling of stacking kindling – each line placed to stave off the cold!

Thank you. I like your analogy to stacking kindling. It is a good night for a fire (if you have a wood stove or fireplace).

yes, some days, the damp is too much – but at least we’re slowly walking towards spring – I’ll skip on the wood stove though, stacked/built enough fires these past few years. LOL – cheers!

Ah yes…..we are beginning to come out of hibernation! Well writ! Spring shall come!

We do tend to hibernate in winter–a reflective time of year. And winter lingers. Or, in my experience this year, has finally made itself known. Crazy weather.

Spring is more a state of mind than anything like warm. Bring on the tomato soup and wool socks for two more months!

Winter blood bathing cold joints…. This is especially true as the cold fronts slide on through.

Yours is the first recipe poem I’ve seen in a while, Janice. These lines are so effective:
‘Winter blood still
bathes chilled joints’
and
‘We are defrosting,
departing from winter hibernation’.

Nice words…..and despite the fact it IS getting much colder, rather encouraging 🙂

We’re above zero Celsius today 🙂 Below zero at night though.

‘We are defrosting, departing from winter hibernation’.. that is such an apt description of one bidding farewell to the season. 🙂

Well-done, Janice. I made a pot of vegetable soup the other day while the cold rain was falling. I think we’re going to have a closer-to-spring day today.

I like how the change to spring is viewed as “We are defrosting”.

Great poem, all the things to come out of hibernation. I especially like the soup….perfect! It is spring one day and winter the next here!
