Patterns emerge over time:
ebb, flow
snag, stall,
standstill.
Tonight my meditation
cushion called. I heard
computer hum,
crickets chirp,
dryer drone
and all that and
this, swarming
like a cloud of shadflies
settled to pleasant
stillness,
a feeling of sitting
low and true.

‘Still’ is this Monday’s quadrille prompt at dVerse Poets Pub. Grace included a quote by Ram Dass: “The quieter you become, the more you can hear.”

I watched a video of shadflies. I don’t think I have ever seen them before but I have seen insects moving around lights in clouds. If meditation calms a cloud of shadflies in one’s mind, it is a very valuable practice.

I got my first taste of this season’s shadflies yesterday…you can see clouds of them near ground level like small tornados. When I got into the car I wanted to open the window to let the trapped ones out but was afraid of letting more in. Just stopping and sitting still can settle the mind shadflies…I really need to get into it again.

you gave us so much in these few lines – letting the sounds come and go to the still point was pure poetry

Beautifully meditative Janice, I love the ending into ‘pleasant stillness, a feeling of sitting low and true’

Thank you. There’s something about sitting close to the floor that feels right.

When insects swarm like that it’s a pest… good if we can get some stillness then.

Interesting imagery of “mind shadflies”. Life can be that way at times. Too much whirling and twirling that clouds our sense of peace. Finding stillness is a must. Love how you described the meditative pose. ❤

Thanks Olga :)) they are tiny and quiet but their clouds get in your face in an unpleasant way….

It’s nice to have still moments with so much “noise” around us. Are shadflies like dragonflies? They look similar, so I wasn’t sure if it’s the same and they just have different names or if they’re completely different.

Hi…thanks for asking. It’s been dawning on me that if people don’t have shadflies where they live and look them up they may not realize how fine and tiny they are. Their impact is in their large numbers creating clouds in the air….fortunately they are not noisy like mosquitoes…

I did some more looking and what I thought were similarities are not, ha. Dragonflies are completely different. Ah, mosquitoes. Their noise alone is annoying, not to mention their biting.
