Naomi Klein refers to a ‘dominance-based worldview’ and ’empathy-exterminating mindset’ in This Changes Everything–Capitalism vs The Climate, 2014, Alfred A. Knopf Canada, p. 48:
…their dominance-based worldview provides them with the intellectual tools to write off huge swaths of humanity, and indeed, to rationalize profiting from the meltdown [caused by climate change].
In a recent New York Times Opinion piece (well worth reading) George Yancy makes the following observation in It’s Black History Month. Look in the Mirror:
As a people, African-Americans forced the United States of America to look deep into its own soul and to see the moral bankruptcy that lay there….
On paper, America stood for freedom. Yet that freedom was denied to black people.’
This is my first Skinny poem attempt:
A Skinny is a short poem form that consists of eleven lines. The first and eleventh lines can be any length (although shorter lines are favored). The eleventh and last line must be repeated using the same words from the first and opening line (however they can be rearranged). The second, sixth, and tenth lines must be identical. NOTE: All the lines in this form, except for the first and last lines, must be comprised of ONLY one word. The Skinny was created by Truth Thomas…
Seriously good, Janice and I love the idea of a skinny poem – I’m learning all the time. Hope you write more of these and amazing how much you can introduce in such a tight concentrated format. Well done.

Thanks for the encouragement Annika. I hope to do more Skinnys to get more familiar with the form.

It’s amazing what can be said in just a few words. This is an interesting poetic form.

You did well with such an exacting form. I really like the quotes you have used. Naomi Klein is always thought provoking.
