Ocean of tears

As the title suggests, this poem is about profound sadness–not a topic that I rush to write about. But I have been a loyal participant in Jane Dougherty’s Poetry Challenge for a while–a challenge is meant to be  a challenge. The photographic reproduction of ‘Tears’ by French painter Odilon Redon was the prompt, together with optional words: Tears, Fly, Hue, Stealing, and Horizon. I used some of these words.

A drowning soul
flounders in an
ocean of tears and
tormented thought
held only by
small feathers.

Rivers of tears
blur eyes
clog nostrils,
chafe skin,
yet ears
wait.

Eternal night
retreats,soft hues of dawn
steal muffled
dark,
 feathering
daytime flight.

Plates clatter,
distant voices tone,
machines whir,
traffic rumbles,
house fan blows.

Wind wanders, whines
rattling gutters,
Birds chatter,
sending
calls and
warnings.

Small feathers
gently fan
life's pulse
moving waves of
sound,
breath,
and thought.

A drowning soul
flounders in an
ocean of tears,
held only by
small feathers.
